Play Tips for Parents

Kid-Powered Play

  • Every exhibit is designed to empower kids to take the lead while growing important skills like critical thinking, creativity, confidence and more.
  • The experiences are hands on, with lots of props, materials and tools. Kids pick their path, create their own stories and drive their own fun.
  • The museum was created to provide dynamic experiences. Gallery components change, teaching artists and other activities are brought in so members and visitors can experience and try something new. Check our emails and Facebook page for information.

Be a Great Play Partner Enhance your child’s play and watch them grow before your eyes. It’s easy:

  • Join your child’s story and add challenges or plot twists.

Rochester Museum Closed

Minnesota Children’s Museum of Rochester is closed. A new play place called Spark is planning to open in summer 2020 at Apache Mall just outside downtown Rochester.

Minnesota Children’s Museum members who purchased a Passport or above membership before Jan. 31, 2020, will receive free admission to the new Spark play space in Rochester through the term of their annual membership or until Jan. 31, 2021, whichever date comes first.

Minnesota Children’s Museum members who purchased a Passport or above membership after Jan. 31, 2020, will receive a 50 percent discount at Spark through the Association of Children’s Museum network.

MEMBERSHIP EXTENSION FAQ

Does my membership get extended to account for the museum being closed?

Yes. All members will automatically get their memberships extended to ensure they get 12 months of free admission to the museum.

Can I cancel or suspend my membership?

We are not cancelling or suspending memberships. Expiration dates have been extended to ensure that members get 12 months of play under their current membership term. Memberships will remain active through the new expiration date. Please call 651-225-6000 with any additional questions.

Are you offering refunds on memberships?

We do not provide full or partial refunds on memberships.

The date on my membership card has expired. Are you sending out new cards?

The museum’s computer system will reflect the new expiration date, so you will be able to check in even if your membership card indicates an expired date. New cards may be issued at check-in during your first visit back to the museum.

Do I still get a discount at other children’s museums?

Yes, admission discounts at children’s museums across the U.S. are still in place, but you will need a current membership card when checking-in at these locations. If you will be traveling and have an expired card, please contact us to obtain a new one. Please allow two weeks for processing and mailing of your new cards.

Why should I renew my membership?

Your membership fee provides valuable support to Minnesota Children’s Museum, a nonprofit organization that’s been providing playful learning experiences for nearly 40 years.

Now is a great time to add a year to your existing membership (which is being extended to ensure that you get a full 12 months of play). We’re planning to raise prices by $10 on the Passport, Deluxe and Premier membership levels on Aug. 1. Renew before then to beat the price increase.

6 Questions with Dr. Nathan, Jenny & Nchare Chomilo

For about a year now, two-year old Nchare and his parents – Dr. Nathan and Jenny Chomilo – have been members of Minnesota Children’s Museum. We were excited to hear from this family of medical professionals about their experience as museum members and what play means to them. We recently asked them some questions and we love their answers.

Dynamic Duo: Erica & Sloane

Erica Sunde and her nearly two-year-old daughter Sloane received a museum membership as a gift about a year ago. It’s been a gift that keeps on giving as it has provided this dynamic duo with unlimited fun for a whole year.

Meet Taj, aka “Ukulele Dad”

Our members are like family to us. We get to meet them and see them on a regular basis and watch their families and kids grow. It’s one of the best parts about working here. We occasionally get the chance to highlight some of our members and the unique personalities and talents they bring to our community. One member who all of our staff know is Taj or, as he’s affectionately known around here, “Ukulele Dad.”

7 Questions with Member Erica Villanueva

Erica Villanueva and her family have been members of Minnesota Children’s Museum for at least three years. We recently asked Erica some questions about her family, their experiences at the museum and what play means to them. We loved her answers!

New Member Family: Amber, Tyler & Kids

For two years running, Minnesota Children’s Museum has been a hot spot for Amber, Tyler and their two kids – a daughter (5) and son (2). They have two cats too, although the furbabies stay home when this central Minnesota family makes the trip to the museum.
