
Managing Family Anxiety During Times of Stress
You’d be hard-pressed to find a family that isn’t feeling increased levels of anxiety and stress today. Whether it’s due to global events, work and school pressures, political climate, family budgets or health concerns, the weight of anxiety can often feel overwhelming.
As parents, it’s crucial to recognize how these stressors can ripple through the family. Children are astute and recognize that things feel stressful or unstable, even if they might not fully understand the source of their worries.
However, there are effective strategies that families can adopt to help manage anxiety and foster a sense of calm and security at home.
- Create space to talk about feelings
One of the most effective ways to manage anxiety is to encourage open communication. Create a safe space where everyone feels comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings. This means actively listening to your children, validating their emotions and allowing them to share their concerns without fear of judgment. - Establish structure and routine
During times of stress, creating structure can provide a sense of stability and predictability for children. Following familiar routines for meals, homework, playtime and bedtime can help alleviate anxious feelings. And don’t forget to schedule time for fun activities and spending time together as well. - Practice mindfulness together

Set boundaries around media consumption, only turning on televisions and mobile devices at specified times. Encourage family discussions about what’s happening in the world, but also focus on fostering resilience and highlighting positive stories. - Get outside and move
Nature and physical activity are both proven to reduce anxiety and improve moods. When stressful feelings arise, encourage the whole family to get some fresh air and exercise, whether that means going for a walk, playing a quick game of tag or even having an impromptu dance party in the driveway. Not only does exercise release endorphins that boost happiness, but it also provides a valuable opportunity for family bonding.
