One of our amazing senior exhibit developers, Mary, started a letter-search game in her neighborhood that is keeping kids (and adults!) learning, having fun and staying connected with each other. Here’s how it works:

  1. Each Monday, neighbors post 2-4 letters in their front windows or doors.
  2. Throughout the week, neighbors walk around and find the letters.
  3. Each player creates words, phrases or sentences using the letters they found.
  4. Players share their creations in a private Facebook group.

“This was originally something I thought kids would enjoy,” said Mary. “But once I started talking to neighbors, many adults wanted in on the action, and I realized it was really a fun game for kids AND adults.”

One of the neighbors shared with Mary how much her four-year-old son has loved this game. “He just made his friend’s name and was happy. Thanks for doing this! Literacy, community… It’s everything!”

What a great, community-building game to try in your own neighborhood!
