One of our amazing senior exhibit developers, Mary, started a letter-search game in her neighborhood that is keeping kids (and adults!) learning, having fun and staying connected with each other. Here’s how it works:
- Each Monday, neighbors post 2-4 letters in their front windows or doors.
- Throughout the week, neighbors walk around and find the letters.
- Each player creates words, phrases or sentences using the letters they found.
- Players share their creations in a private Facebook group.
“This was originally something I thought kids would enjoy,” said Mary. “But once I started talking to neighbors, many adults wanted in on the action, and I realized it was really a fun game for kids AND adults.”
One of the neighbors shared with Mary how much her four-year-old son has loved this game. “He just made his friend’s name and was happy. Thanks for doing this! Literacy, community… It’s everything!”
What a great, community-building game to try in your own neighborhood!
