Museum in St. Paul Opening in June
There’s no way around it — this is disappointing news: Our newly expanded museum in downtown St. Paul won’t open until June.
We’d been working toward reopening in April. Unfortunately, as anyone who’s ever embarked on a construction project large or small knows, plans often go off track when you’re building things.
In this case, the “thing” at issue is The Scramble. This is the awesome four-story climbing adventure we’ve been talking so much about lately. The Scramble will occupy that big glass addition you may have already seen in front of the museum along West Seventh Street.
It’s going to be super cool. Kids will climb up, down, over and through The Scramble. It will have two climbing towers, a long spiral slide and, for the most daring among us, a netted see-through catwalk suspended more than 40 feet above the floor.
This is a one-of-a-kind structure, with custom-built components. When a contractor we hired to fabricate The Scramble went out of business, our project team had to “scramble” to find a new company to finish constructing the pieces.
That caused an unavoidable delay in the schedule for completing The Scramble. And because installing this structure and finishing related construction will affect so many other areas of the building, we’re not able to open the museum until The Scramble is ready.
So we’re shifting our reopening to June. Stay tuned for exact dates for grand opening events.
Our current members get a two-month extension to make up for the delay. Everyone at the museum values all our member families. They’re the lifeblood of the museum — and many have showed tremendous spirit as they supported us through construction and now this closure period.
A note about our Mall of America location, too: This is a temporary “pop up” location that will remain open through April 23. Unfortunately, the museum is not able to extend the run of the MOA location.
We know this delay in reopening the St. Paul museum is no fun. We apologize and appreciate everyone’s support and patience as we complete this project.
We’re sure you’re going to find the renovated and expanded museum worth the wait. We’re creating 10 new exhibits and a bunch of great new amenities. It’s going to be a bigger, better and bolder children’s museum.
