Adventures in Play
Adventures in Play
It was a year for family favorites: Dousing pretend flames and moving packages in Our World, scrubbing the wacky vehicle in Forces at Play and zooming down the spiral slide in The Scramble.
It was a year to try new things: Solving challenges with Wallace & Gromit, mastering the wildest ping pong tables anyone’s ever seen and exploring a shipwreck along a whimsical version of Lake Superior’s North Shore.
Families came from far and wide to have fun, make memories and stretch their imaginations as the museum and the entire community continued to rebound from the pandemic.
Relying on the committed efforts of staff and board members and leaning into critical support from donors, the museum achieved important milestones during fiscal 2022 (July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022):
- Served more than 250,000 visitors, 20% of whom received free or discounted admission through the museum’s Play for All access program
- Completed a Revive Campaign that raised more than $6 million to help stabilize and sustain the museum
- Opened a new permanent exbibit and premiered a new traveling exhibit
- Launched Securian Financial Free First Sundays
- Resumed welcoming field trips, serving nearly 14,000 students and chaperones

Investing in Experiences
Kids and caregivers know they’ll discover something new almost every time they visit. That’s a big part of what makes exploring the museum so rewarding. The museum’s experience teams delivered plenty of fun new adventures this past year.
Shipwreck Adventures
- Inspired by a real Lake Superior shipwreck
- Giant sunken hull, cargo cranes, cliffs and coves, laser maze diver training and climbing wall
- First new permanent exhibit to open since the museum’s expansion in 2017
Nature Remix in Imaginopolis
- A quirky and inspiring environment for children to create their own world and tell their own stories
- Whimsical forest filled with animals, plants and insects
- Squirrel’s house, oversized leaves, fish scales and giant bird’s nest
Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep: Shear Genius
- First-ever traveling exhibit based on the popular animated movie and TV characters
- Debuted summer 2022 at Minnesota Children’s Museum before departing for a national tour
The Play Lounge in Creativity Jam | Target Gallery
- Ping pong tables with a twist… literally!
- Mindful games and activities to get grownups thinking and doing
Minnesota Children’s Museum could not survive without generous donors and supporters, who provide resources needed to spark children’s learning through play.
In March 2020, the museum launched a Resiliency Campaign focused on safeguarding against cash deficits. Facing continued impact from pandemic closures, the campaign expanded to become the Revive Campaign. Donors and other supporters delivered incredible energy and engagement to help the museum achieve its Revive Campaign fundraising goal. The campaign had two major components:
- Stabilize: $3 million to fund annual operations and minimize deficits
- Sustain: $3 million to grow the endowment to provide support for years to come
Donors stepped up with $6.1 million in contributions. Participation from the museum’s Board of Directors was instrumental in the campaign’s success.
The museum also received a critical $1 million grant from the City of Saint Paul through the Tourism Recovery Support Program.
In May, sponsors and other supporters rocked our world with $300,000 in donations during the Play Rocks! Gala, a fun night that marked a return to in-person fundraising events at the museum.

“Why I Love the Museum…”
Members explain what makes Minnesota Children’s Museum so special.
Dedicated Staff Powers the Play
Fun, clean and safe. These are the attributes that set the foundation for great experiences at Minnesota Children’s Museum.
Box office staff, museum experience employees, custodians and security personnel work tirelessly every day to make sure families get the most out of their visit.
Committed to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Working toward racial justice is core to the museum’s mission and vision. The organization’s strategic plan calls for the museum to “champion children’s healthy development.” We know there is no way to meaningfully advocate the wellbeing of kids without acknowledging and addressing racial inequities that harm children in Minnesota.
The museum aims to provide a diverse, welcoming and inclusive environment for visitors and staff. Efforts during the past year to advance this commitment included:
- Investment in Filter Shift cultural competence training for staff
- An inclusive leadership series for senior leaders
- Work by the museum’s Play Champions DEI working group to make progress toward increased diversity in hiring and retention
Access for All
All families, regardless of income, should get the opportunity to enjoy the playful learning that happens at Minnesota Children’s Museum. The museum’s Play for All access program provides:
- Free or discounted All Play tickets and memberships to income-qualified families
- Discounted group visit tickets for organizations that serve predominantly students from low-income families
- Free admission on Securian Financial Free First Sundays
During fiscal 2022, nearly 50,000 children and adults enjoyed the museum through the Play for All program.
What’s your favorite museum memory?
“Just the beautiful chaos of getting wet and soapy for the first time in the car wash! It was hilarious and refreshing.” – All Play member
We ❤ Members!
Members are the heart and soul of Minnesota Children’s Museum.
We are thankful for thousands of families who joined or renewed their membership during the past year.
Membership is truly a “win-win!” Families get to visit as often as they want for a year and the museum receives much-needed support that helps keep our doors open.
Beyond Our Walls
The museum’s mission is to spark children’s learning through play. We envision a community where kids (and adults) play more… and not just inside our museum. Here are some of the ways the museum worked during the past year to champion the importance of playful learning throughout the community.
Play Kits
- Tinker kits with a variety of materials, funded through the state Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund
- Provided free to schools and organizations serving families in need
More than 2,200 kits distributed
Resources for Parents and Other Caregivers
- Developed content for an updated playful parenting content hub on mcm.org
- Funded by a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services
Big Orange Dance Machine
- Highway message trailer converted into an interactive dance experience
- Brought pop-up fun to community events
Fiscal Year 2022
July 1, 2021 – June 30, 2022
While Minnesota Children’s Museum continues to be impacted by the pandemic, attendance grew over the prior year, particularly after the infection spikes from COVID variants subsided. Market declines significantly reduced investment returns of the endowment.
Philanthropic support from generous donors to the Revive Campaign helped support museum operations and grew the endowment.
Net assets increased by $1,432,000. Paycheck Protection Program loan forgiveness and Employee Retention Credits contributed to the surplus.
Seventy six percent of the museum’s expenses went toward programs.
